Franklin County Commissioners Delay Data Center Votes

The Franklin County Commission is preparing to vote on two competing data center proposals but will not reach a decision before September 1. Presiding Commissioner Dave Schake stated the delay is necessary as officials await further information and conduct due diligence.

The commission is working with consultant Steve Etcher of Springline Advisory to develop a financial model and analyze the potential tax impacts of the projects. One proposal, submitted by Provident Data Centers for a site near Gray Summit, received a recommendation for approval from the Franklin County Planning and Zoning Commission. The second proposal, from Beltline Energy for a site south of Pacific, was previously rejected in April.

Local residents have expressed strong political opposition to the facilities, leading officials to seek a larger venue for the upcoming vote to accommodate expected crowds. Some opponents have cited a disconnect between the Republican commissioners and the will of the local population.
