Faulty Backup Cameras Trigger 21 Million US Vehicle Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has tracked the recall of approximately 21 million vehicles in the United States over the last eight years due to faulty backup camera systems. This number increases to nearly 28 million when including recreational vehicles and small buses. Nearly 6 million of these recalls occurred within the previous year alone.

Recent failures include a March recall by Ford Motor Company of 1.7 million vehicles due to overheating components and reversed camera images. In May, Honda Motor Company recalled nearly 60,000 electric vehicles because of a manufacturing flaw that allowed debris or water to enter the camera housing. These recalls follow a 2008 mandate signed by George W. Bush intended to reduce pedestrian injuries and deaths.

Industry experts and Consumer Reports suggest that malfunctions often stem from software errors or failures in central infotainment computers rather than the camera hardware itself. This increasing technological complexity has led to a surge in consumer complaints, with J.D. Power ranking backup cameras among the top 10 most-troublesome vehicle features since 2022.
