CNN CEO Mark Thompson Stays After Skydance Acquisition

CNN CEO Mark Thompson will remain chairman and editor in chief following Skydance's $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

CNN chief executive Mark Thompson announced Monday that he will continue as chairman and editor in chief following the $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Skydance. Thompson will report to Skydance chief executive David Ellison and co-chief executive Ynon Kreiz, retaining his current responsibilities and prerogatives.

The decision follows contract discussions and plans to integrate CNN with CBS News, another Skydance asset. To protect editorial integrity, a settlement with state attorneys general regarding an antitrust lawsuit has established an editorial independence board. Thompson stated he has "real confidence" that the new leadership will support the principle of independent news.

Despite the leadership continuity, the merger faces operational challenges. Integration efforts must address differences in unionization between the networks and the potential for layoffs resulting from overlapping operations.
