Rising Electricity Costs Hit Pennsylvania and Finland Households

Households in Pennsylvania and Finland face rising electricity costs driven by generation rate hikes in the U.S. and resource shortages in Europe.

Rising electricity costs are creating financial strain for households in Pennsylvania and Finland, though the causes vary by region. In Pennsylvania, the Public Utility Law Project reports that generation rates have increased between 18% and 52%. This surge has left roughly one in four state families struggling to pay energy costs, contributing to a 27% increase in involuntary utility shutoffs since 2022.

In Finland, electricity prices are expected to rise this autumn, with September averages potentially reaching nine cents per kilowatt hour. Finnish Energy attributes these increases to low Nordic hydro resources, conflicts in the Middle East, and scheduled maintenance of the OL3 reactor. Despite the immediate hike, the organization noted that winter price futures do not yet appear significant.

To mitigate these costs, experts from Motiva and Finnish Energy are advising Finnish households to evaluate their usage patterns and choose between spot-price and fixed-price contracts. Meanwhile, the Building a Brighter PA campaign in Pennsylvania is advocating for stronger consumer protections and a transition toward renewable energy to stabilize long-term costs.
