Ethiopian Forces Capture Mekelle as Tigray Conflict Escalates
Ethiopian federal forces captured the Tigrayan capital of Mekelle, ending the 2022 Pretoria ceasefire and triggering a regional diplomatic crisis.
Ethiopian federal forces captured the Tigrayan capital of Mekelle after nearly two weeks of fighting, forcing an alliance of rebel groups to withdraw. The offensive, which utilized both air and ground power, effectively ends the 2022 Pretoria ceasefire. While the city is secure, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has pledged to continue a guerrilla-style rebellion from the countryside.
The conflict has expanded into a regional crisis. Eritrean troops have reportedly entered northern Tigrayan towns, including Adigrat and Idaga Hamus. This escalation follows a period of severe diplomatic deterioration, including Ethiopia's expulsion of Eritrean diplomats on October 1 and Eritrea's subsequent decision to sever diplomatic ties.
Regional tensions are driven by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's strategic goal to secure an outlet to the Red Sea, a move Eritrea views as an existential threat. In response to these ambitions, the leaders of Egypt, Eritrea, Sudan, and Somalia held a consultative summit on October 4 in New Alamein, Egypt. While the four nations sought to strengthen coordination, they stopped short of forming a formal military alliance.
