Microsoft Launches Xbox Disc-to-Digital Conversion Program
Microsoft is allowing Xbox owners to convert physical game discs into digital entitlements to ensure game preservation amid a broader industry shift away from physical media.
Microsoft announced a new disc-to-digital feature for Xbox that allows owners of physical games to claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console. This entitlement enables users to play games across supported devices, including PC via Xbox Play Anywhere and handhelds via Xbox Cloud Gaming, while the physical disc remains functional. Testing for the feature begins with Xbox Insiders on August 31.
Asha Sharma, CEO of Xbox, framed the initiative as a way to maintain choice for players who value physical media while prioritizing efficiency and affordability. Sharma noted that hardware component crises and AI-related RAM shortages have driven up electronics prices, though she declined to confirm if the upcoming Xbox Helix console will include a disc drive. The move follows a decision by Sony Interactive Entertainment to end physical disc production for new PlayStation games by January 2028.
Xbox VP of Next Generation Jason Ronald described the program as a commitment to game preservation, though he noted that not every title will be available at launch because publishers control participation. This strategic shift occurs as Xbox manages internal turmoil, including the divestment of five internal studios and the cutting of approximately 3,200 roles after Sharma described the division's business as not healthy.
