Zambia Detains Opposition Leader Brian Mundubile on Treason Charges

Zambian police detained opposition leader Brian Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, on Thursday over allegations of plotting an armed insurgency and treason. The pair surrendered for questioning after seeking refuge at a United Nations building in Lusaka, following assurances of due process from the presidency.

The arrests follow a disputed August 13 presidential election in which incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema was declared the winner with approximately 60% of the vote, compared to 38% for Mundubile. Mundubile rejected the results, citing irregularities and the removal of tally papers. He dismissed the government's claims of an insurgency as "total fabrications."

Tensions escalated after a security raid on a property linked to Mundubile left former cabinet minister Mutotwe Kafwaya dead and 11 others arrested. While authorities claim they found military equipment, Mundubile asserts the opposition was unarmed. Further friction arose when the government closed the judiciary on the final day for filing legal challenges, citing security concerns. Chief Justice Mumba Malila later referred an election petition to the Constitutional Court after receiving documents via his private email, a method he called "highly irregular."

President Hichilema, who is scheduled for inauguration on September 1, has faced accusations of authoritarianism and democratic backsliding. International observers, including Transparency International, have questioned the timing of the court closures and the resulting obstruction of legal remedies for the opposition.
