Gabe Vasquez Leads Tight New Mexico Congressional Race

Democratic Representative Gabe Vasquez holds a four-point lead over Republican Greg Cunningham in a high-spending battle for New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District.

An Albuquerque Journal poll shows Democratic incumbent Gabe Vasquez leading Republican challenger Greg Cunningham by four percentage points, 48% to 44%, in the race for New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District. With the election roughly 20 days away, the contest has become a focal point for national political action committees and significant spending.

Greg Cunningham has received the "complete and total endorsement" of President Donald Trump and support from Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, who campaigned for him in Las Cruces. Cunningham claims he has the momentum and argues that Vasquez has "sold out" the district. Vasquez has countered by labeling Cunningham a "MAGA extremist" and citing the impact of the ongoing war with Iran on the economy.

Analysts note that Cunningham faces a district map redrawn by Democratic state legislators to favor Democratic candidates, a move that previously aided Vasquez in his victory over Yvette Herrell. While other federal races in New Mexico are considered safely Democratic, the 2nd District remains highly competitive. Meanwhile, senior Republican lawmakers privately express doubt about maintaining control of the House of Representatives in the midterms, shifting their focus toward limiting losses.
