Masked protesters briefly stormed the lobby of the Marseille city hall on Saturday, using a barricade to force their way through the entrance. The demonstrators, some wearing high-visibility yellow vests, spray-painted an anarchist symbol on a wall and shouted that they were "taking the Bastille" before law enforcement forces dispersed them.
The Yellow Vest movement organized the demonstrations under the banner of "yellow and youth." The movement originally emerged eight years ago to oppose fuel tax hikes implemented by the government of President Emmanuel Macron.
These protests in Marseille escalated into violent clashes. At least one demonstrator was observed wearing a Palestinian flag during the unrest.
