EU and Western Allies Condemn Israel E1 Settlement Tenders

The European Union and a coalition of Western nations have condemned the Israeli government's decision to advance construction in the E1 corridor between Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adumim. The controversy centers on a tender for seven residential compounds totaling 1,234 housing units, which critics argue would divide the West Bank and isolate East Jerusalem.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas urged the Government of Israel to withdraw the tender, asserting that such settlements are illegal under international law and fundamentally harm the prospect of a two-state solution. This position was echoed by the Government of Austria, with Chancellor Christian Stocker and Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger stating that the expansion violates international law and creates facts on the ground that hinder the peace process.

The diplomatic pressure follows a joint statement from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom, which labeled the tender unacceptable and warned participating companies of legal and reputational risks. Additionally, the United States Department of State expressed opposition to the annexation of the area, stating that a stable West Bank is essential for regional peace and Israeli security.
