CIA Director Ratcliffe Retracts 19 Reports Citing Political Bias

CIA Director John Ratcliffe ordered the retraction or substantive revision of 19 intelligence reports after reviews determined they contained political bias and failed to meet analytic tradecraft standards. The reports, produced over the last decade during the Obama and Biden administrations, were identified by the President's Intelligence Advisory Board and an internal review led by Deputy Director Michael Ellis.

Seventeen reports were completely retracted, while two were pulled for substantive revision. Released examples of the affected work include a 2015 analysis of LGBTQ+ rights in the Middle East and North Africa, a 2020 report on COVID-19 pandemic contraceptive shortfalls in developing countries, and a 2021 report regarding women's roles in white racially and ethnically motivated violent extremism.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton praised the move, arguing that previous administrations mixed intelligence and politics while focusing on irrelevant topics. Conversely, Senator Mark Warner condemned the retractions as the politicization of intelligence, warning that allowing political appointees to dictate acceptable analysis threatens the independence and credibility of the Intelligence Community.
