Australia Plans Largest Data Center to Support AI Training

Australia is advancing plans to construct its largest data center in the remote far north of Western Australia to support large-scale AI training. Alex Jenkins, director of the WA Data Science Innovation Hub at Curtin University, stated the facility is essential for maintaining data sovereignty in sensitive sectors such as defense, mining, and health. He noted that a center of this scale would require power equivalent to a medium-sized city, suggesting the potential use of renewable energy to mitigate the load.

In a separate but related development, Corinium Global Intelligence will host the Data Centre Exchange Australia 2026 in Sydney on May 26. The forum will bring together senior executives from operators including Equinix, NEXTDC, and Macquarie Data Centres Pty Limited. The event aims to address the critical challenges of AI-ready infrastructure, including water usage, delivery timelines, and power availability, to better align infrastructure outcomes with surging demand.
