Fairphone Launches Modular Gen 6+ Smartphone in United States

Fairphone has entered the U.S. market with the Gen 6+, a modular smartphone featuring user-replaceable parts and software support through 2033.

Dutch electronics manufacturer Fairphone has officially entered the United States market with the launch of the Fairphone (Gen 6+). Available via Amazon and the company's own web shop for approximately $649 to $650, the device marks the first time the brand has sold its handsets directly to American consumers, whereas previous models were only available through a partner.

The Gen 6+ is a midrange Android 16 device featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor, 12GB of RAM, and a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED display. It is designed for longevity and sustainability, featuring 12 user-replaceable parts—including the battery, display, and USB-C port—that can be swapped using a provided Torx T5 screwdriver. The company provides a five-year warranty and commits to software and spare part support until 2033.

CEO Raymond van Eck stated the expansion targets consumers exhausted by planned obsolescence and a market dominated by a duopoly. The device is certified for T-Mobile and AT&T networks, though it lacks support for AT&T's FirstNet spectrum. In addition to the standard Android version, a de-Googled version powered by Murena SAS's e/OS is available for $699. Nathan Proctor of the U.S. Public Interest Research Group described the launch as proof that companies can create fixable modular products if they choose to do so.
