Iran Claims Downing of Two US Drones Over Qeshm Island

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reported shooting down two US drones and recovering seven others amid ongoing hostilities and missile strikes on Qeshm Island.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported shooting down two United States drones over Qeshm Island and the Strait of Hormuz between Friday and Saturday. The IRGC Aerospace Force first announced the destruction of an MQ-1 reconnaissance and combat drone on Friday, claiming it was the 16th MQ-1 it has downed. By Saturday, Iranian state media reported the shoot-down of an MQ-9 drone following two missile strikes that hit the Suza area of Qeshm Island.

During a press briefing in Tehran for IRGC Aerospace Week, Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi stated that Iranian air defense units have downed 260 hostile aircraft since the United States initiated hostilities. Mohebbi further claimed that Iran recovered seven intact MQM-170 reconnaissance drones over the last two weeks, describing the recovery as a demonstration of technological superiority.

Mohebbi detailed a strategic shift toward indigenous military production, noting that Iran has moved production facilities underground to protect them from bombardment. He asserted that Iran has transitioned from importing weaponry to exporting systems, including the Arman missile and the Khordad-3 air defense system. These events follow a US-Israeli offensive against Iran that began on February 28, while Qatari mediators continue to work toward a resolution between Washington and Tehran.
