Qualcomm Faces Valuation Gap Amid Edge AI Focus

Qualcomm trails AI chip rivals Nvidia and Broadcom in stock growth and projected revenue due to its focus on consumer edge AI over cloud infrastructure.

Qualcomm is currently valued more expensively relative to future earnings than its primary AI chip competitors, Nvidia and Broadcom, despite significantly lower stock growth over the last five years. While Nvidia and Broadcom experienced rallies of approximately 1,000% and 630% respectively, Qualcomm saw its stock rise by 40%.

This valuation gap stems from the company's strategic focus on edge AI, which involves on-device processing for PCs, wearables, and mobile devices. Because this segment targets budget-constrained consumer manufacturers, Qualcomm faces limited pricing power compared to Nvidia and Broadcom, both of which serve hyperscalers investing heavily in cloud-based AI infrastructure.

Analysts project slower growth for the company, with revenue and earnings per share compound annual growth rates of 6% and 27% through fiscal 2028. This contrasts with the 60% plus growth expected for its peers. To address these growth limitations, Qualcomm is attempting to enter the data center market with its Cloud AI 100 and next-generation accelerators.
