Americans Estimate $1.46 Million Needed for Comfortable Retirement
Northwestern Mutual reports that Americans believe they need $1.46 million to retire comfortably, though the firm warns this figure reflects anxiety rather than calculated needs.
A 2026 Planning & Progress Study by Northwestern Mutual found that Americans believe they require $1.46 million to retire comfortably. This estimate represents an increase of more than 15% from the previous year. The company cautioned that this figure reflects respondent anxiety rather than a calculated financial requirement and should not be used as a personal savings target.
Analysis suggests the actual savings gap for most households is lower than the headline figure. For households receiving two average Social Security checks, which provide approximately $47,000 in annual pre-tax income, the capital equivalent of those benefits is between $1.1 million and $1.2 million based on the standard 4% withdrawal rule.
Other industry benchmarks provide different estimates. A 2025 survey from the Charles Schwab Corporation estimated the amount needed for retirement at $1.6 million.
