Michigan Democrats Struggle to Unify Behind Senate Nominee Abdul El-Sayed

Democratic candidates and officials in Michigan are struggling to unify ahead of the November elections following a contentious Senate primary won by Abdul El-Sayed. Internal divisions have emerged over El-Sayed's criticism of Israel's military operations in Gaza and his association with controversial streamer Hasan Piker.

Several Democratic figures, including U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten, Michigan state Rep. Jeremy Moss, and New Jersey Rep. Josh Gottheimer, have withheld their support for El-Sayed. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel also criticized the nominee for his past comments regarding an attack on a synagogue. U.S. Senator Cory Booker condemned Piker's language targeting Jewish Americans as antisemitic and dangerous.

While Rep. Debbie Dingell and Rep. Jamie Raskin are urging the party to focus on Republican opponent Mike Rogers, tensions remain high. During a campaign event in Ann Arbor, El-Sayed expressed frustration that the media and party focus had shifted toward Piker rather than the campaign's goals.

The Michigan Democratic Party is scheduled to hold a convention in Lansing this weekend to finalize its ticket. Party leadership has issued warnings that harassment and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated during the proceedings.
