AI Adoption Disrupts Billable Hour Model in UK Law

Legal professionals in the UK and Ireland are adopting AI at scale, forcing a shift away from traditional hourly billing as automation accelerates document analysis.

Nearly 90% of legal professionals in the United Kingdom and Ireland now use artificial intelligence, according to a report by Clio. The technology allows approximately 80% of adopting firms to increase their workload without adding resources by automating administrative tasks and document review.

Major firms including A&O Shearman and Slaughter and May have integrated AI agents from Harvey to analyze loan agreements and regulatory filings. This shift is undermining the traditional billable-hour business model. Senior legal leaders expect the share of hourly billing to drop from 72% to 44% in the coming years, as tasks that once required hours are completed in minutes.

Industry leaders warn that this transition creates a training gap for junior lawyers. Because AI now handles the repetitive drafting and research tasks traditionally used for professional development, firms face a loss of foundational training opportunities. Additionally, the industry continues to manage risks associated with AI hallucinations.
