Rivian Targets 2026 Autonomy Milestone to Unlock Uber Funding
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe announced the company is on track for a 2026 autonomy milestone that will trigger a $250 million investment from Uber.
RJ Scaringe, CEO of Rivian, announced that the electric vehicle manufacturer is on track to meet a critical autonomy milestone by the end of 2026. Achieving this goal will unlock a $250 million funding tranche from Uber as part of a broader agreement providing up to $1.25 billion in investment through 2031, contingent on technical achievements.
The partnership aims to deploy driverless R2 robotaxis on the Uber network by 2028. The rollout will begin in a small number of cities before expanding to approximately 25 locations. Scaringe noted that the company is currently in its first quarter of R2 production and is ramping up a second shift to increase output.
Rivian also reported that the R2 compact SUV outsold its other models during its first full production quarter. Additionally, the company confirmed that a low-cost European electric vehicle, developed through a joint venture with Volkswagen, remains on track for a 2027 launch.
