Alaska Airlines Announces First Direct Anchorage to Tokyo Route

Alaska Airlines will launch nonstop service between Anchorage and Tokyo Narita starting May 13, 2027, using Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

Alaska Airlines will launch its first direct route connecting Alaska to Japan with nonstop service between Anchorage and Tokyo Narita starting May 13, 2027. The seasonal route will operate daily through September 7, 2027, before transitioning to a three-times-weekly schedule in January 2028.

The airline selected Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft for the flights, citing the model's range as the primary reason for choosing it over the MAX 10. This expansion is part of a broader 2027 growth strategy for the Anchorage hub, which also includes new seasonal service to Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and Nashville.

Regional Vice President Marilyn Romano stated the route responds to long-standing demand for direct service between the two regions. Governor Mike Dunleavy Jr. noted that the airline will be the only U.S. domestic carrier providing scheduled service to Tokyo from Alaska. The route remains subject to government approval, with introductory round-trip fares priced at $999 for travel between May 13 and June 7, 2027.
