Elon Musk Launches X Money Digital Payments Platform in April

Elon Musk announced that X Money, a digital payments platform integrated into the social media platform X Corp., will enter early public access in April 2026. The service is a central component of Musk's strategy to transform X Corp. into an everything app similar to WeChat, integrating messaging, shopping, and financial services to diversify revenue and reduce reliance on advertising.

X Money operates as an in-app digital wallet allowing users to send and receive money, set up direct deposits, and earn potential interest of approximately 6% annually. Users can fund their accounts via Visa Direct or connected debit cards. The platform will also offer a physical or virtual debit card personalized with the user's X handle. To support the rollout, X Corp. partnered with Visa and its subsidiary, X Payments, secured money transmitter licenses in Washington, D.C., and over 40 U.S. states.

While early beta testers have demonstrated the transfer capabilities, X Product Lead Nikita Bier clarified that the platform is not acting as a brokerage. The service uses fiat money backed by a bank rather than cryptocurrency, though the launch triggered temporary price volatility for Dogecoin.

Regulatory challenges have emerged in New York, where officials urged the state's Department of Financial Services to deny licensure due to concerns over Musk's business conduct. Conversely, author Nassim Nicholas Taleb endorsed the move, arguing that private currencies should compete and describing the initiative as smarter than Bitcoin.
