BP Cuts Net Debt and Pivots Back to Oil

BP will present a new strategic vision in December after slashing net debt and writing down billions in clean energy assets to refocus on oil and gas.

Chief Executive Meg O’Neill will present a new strategic vision for BP on December 15 in New York, marking her first detailed plan since taking leadership. The update follows pressure from activist investor Elliott Investment Management to reduce costs and strengthen the company's balance sheet.

BP reports a significant financial recovery, with net debt falling from 22.3 billion US dollars in June to an estimated 13.5 billion to 14.5 billion dollars by the end of September. This early achievement of its 2027 target was driven by surging crude and gas prices resulting from the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Refining profitability also improved, with margins expected to rise by 1.9 billion to 2.1 billion dollars over the second quarter.

Despite these gains, the company is pivoting away from clean energy investments it previously described as "misplaced." BP expects to record post-tax impairment charges between 3 billion and 4.5 billion dollars in the third quarter, primarily affecting its gas and low-carbon energy division. These write-downs follow previous impairments in January as the company redirects spending toward its oil and gas segments. BP will report full third-quarter results on October 30.
