GSK Plans to Double Cancer Drug Pipeline by 2027

GSK is expanding its oncology portfolio through strategic acquisitions and accelerated clinical trials to diversify revenue and offset future patent expirations.

GSK plc expects to nearly double its cancer drug clinical pipeline by 2027, increasing its current pool of approximately 15 assets. Hesham Abdullah, head of oncology research and development, stated the company could conduct 19 to 20 late-stage oncology trials next year. To speed up development, the company is advancing some candidates directly to late-stage trials and running multiple pivotal trials concurrently.

Chief Executive Luke Miels is leading an expansion strategy to diversify revenue streams and mitigate the impact of upcoming patent expirations on HIV medications. This effort includes a $10.6 billion all-cash acquisition of Boston-based Nuvalent and licensing agreements with Chinese firms Hansoh Pharmaceuticals, Chimagen Biosciences, and Hengrui Pharma.

The oncology portfolio focuses on blood, lung, prostate, gynecologic, and gastrointestinal cancers. The company utilizes immunotherapies, small-molecule drugs, and antibody-drug conjugates, recently unveiling initial worldwide results for the lung cancer treatment ris-rez at the European Society for Medical Oncology congress.
