OpenAI Bans Rival AI Ads While Partnering With Amazon

OpenAI restricted competing image and audio AI advertisements within ChatGPT while launching a new partnership with Amazon to expand its advertising ecosystem.

OpenAI updated its advertising policies to prohibit competitors in generative artificial intelligence from promoting image- and audio-generating tools within ChatGPT. This shift specifically targets third-party services that compete with the recently released ChatGPT Images 2.5 and ChatGPT Live voice capabilities. Enterprise partners, including Adobe, were notified that promotional content for rival media-generation tools would no longer be approved, though the ban does not extend to video-generation software.

To further protect its ecosystem, the company stopped providing outbound citations and external referral links for certain image-related queries, limiting organic traffic for third-party developers. These restrictions come as OpenAI's advertising unit reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate on August 31, 2026, with a long-term target of $2.4 billion.

Simultaneously, OpenAI entered a partnership with Amazon to allow the retailer's advertisers to run campaigns within ChatGPT, starting with select brands in the United States. Under the agreement, Amazon manages the campaigns while OpenAI controls delivery decisions. The ad units will appear as text or images beneath responses. This collaboration follows a period where Amazon restricted AI platform access to its webstore despite being the top retail advertiser on ChatGPT between April and August.
