AMD Raises GPU Prices Amid Global Memory Shortage
AMD increased Radeon GPU and memory kit prices by at least 10% as AI-driven demand for high-bandwidth memory triggers gaming hardware price hikes.
AMD notified add-in board partners on July 31 that prices for Radeon GPU and GDDR6 memory kits would increase by at least 10% starting in August. This action follows a similar price hike implemented by Nvidia in late July. Supply-chain reports suggest AMD delayed its announcement to briefly maintain a price advantage over its competitor.
The increases stem from a global shortage of GDDR6 memory. Major manufacturers including Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have redirected wafer capacity toward High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) to satisfy the surging demand for AI data centers. This shift has created a ripple effect across the gaming industry, leading to increased costs for consumer hardware.
On August 1, the price of the Xbox Series X rose to $799.99, and Nintendo Inc. scheduled a price increase for the Nintendo Switch 2 to $499.99 effective September 1. Industry leaders from Intel and SK Hynix indicate that these supply constraints and elevated prices may persist until 2028 or beyond.
