Microsoft Integrates Native Internet Speed Test into Windows 11
Microsoft is rolling out a built-in internet speed test for Windows 11 that replaces browser-based redirects with a native system tool.
Microsoft is introducing a native internet speed test tool for Windows 11, moving away from a previous system that redirected users to a Bing web page. The new feature allows users to measure ping, upload speed, and download speed directly through the Quick Settings interface, the Wi-Fi or Cellular flyout, or by right-clicking the network icon in the system tray.
The tool is currently rolling out in preview to Windows Insider users on the Experimental channel via build 26340.9767, though some users may need to enable a specific feature flag in settings. While not explicitly named in the primary release notes, the tool's information tooltip indicates the service is powered by Speedtest, linking to Ookla's privacy policy.
This integration is part of a larger strategy to reduce reliance on browser shortcuts for system-level tasks. This shift is further evidenced by a simultaneous update to the Microsoft 365 subscription experience, which now allows users to manage billing changes directly within the Windows Settings menu.
