Pemberton Mayor Charges Resident During Township Council Meeting
Mayor Matthew Bianchini charged at resident Michael Sawka during a New Jersey council meeting, leading to a court complaint for assault and terroristic threats.
Pemberton Township Mayor Matthew Bianchini charged at resident Michael Sawka during a public council meeting on Wednesday, October 21, in Burlington County, New Jersey. The confrontation occurred during an employment appeal hearing for Kenneth Gerber, the recently terminated director of community development.
Video footage shows Bianchini leaving the administration desk and lunging toward Sawka while shouting, "I am f—ing getting you!" Several people, including Councilman Perry Doyle and Gerber, physically restrained the mayor and escorted him from the chambers. Bianchini later admitted his conduct was wrong but claimed it was justified, alleging that Sawka had smiled, given him the finger, and made obscene gestures toward the mayor's wife and daughter.
Sawka, a part-time lawyer, denied the allegations and asserted he remained calm and seated throughout the incident. He has since filed a municipal court complaint against Bianchini alleging assault and terroristic threats. Sawka is calling for the mayor's resignation and demanding he sign an agreement to never hold political office again.
Bianchini, a Republican appointed in January, stated he has no intention of resigning ahead of the November election. Police have not yet confirmed if formal charges will be filed.
