China Nominates Song Li for World Health Organization Leadership

The Government of China is nominating public health official Song Li to lead the World Health Organization following the United States' withdrawal from the agency.

The Government of China is preparing a late bid to lead the World Health Organization by nominating Song Li, a senior public health official specializing in maternal and child health. Song will compete to succeed current Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, whose term ends next year. The nomination joins six other candidates from Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Qatar, Botswana, Indonesia, and Spain.

This strategic move follows the withdrawal of the United States from the agency in January, an action that triggered significant budget cuts and a reduction in staff and programs. While the United States no longer possesses a vote or veto in the process, critics suggest that a Chinese leader would validate claims that the agency is too deferential to Beijing.

Analysts indicate the timing of the nomination is intended to limit the ability of rivals to organize against Song's candidacy. The final selection will be determined by a secret ballot during the World Health Assembly in May 2027.
