Maine Democrats Seek Replacement Nominee After Graham Platner Withdraws

Thirteen candidates are competing to replace Graham Platner as the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Maine following his withdrawal amid sexual assault allegations.

Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner withdrew from the Maine race in July 2026 following allegations of a pattern of abuse toward women, including a rape accusation from former partner Jenny Racicot. Platner, a Marine combat veteran and oysterman, denied the claims, but his campaign collapsed after losing support from key backers and facing scrutiny over past social media posts and the use of Nazi symbols. His rise had previously forced Governor Janet Mills out of the race and seen him secure over 156,000 primary votes.

Thirteen candidates have now registered to replace Platner, including Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, and former CDC director Nirav Shah. To qualify, candidates must submit 500 signatures by next week. The Maine Democratic Party has organized county-level caucuses to select delegates for a nominating convention in Bangor on July 25, with a final ballot deadline of July 27.

National Democratic leaders have adopted a strategy of non-interference. Senator Bernie Sanders and Senator Elizabeth Warren stated that Maine voters should make their own decisions without outside influence. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer believes the party's chances of defeating Republican incumbent Susan Collins have improved now that negative advertising targeted at Platner is obsolete. The race is further complicated by local tensions following the fatal shooting of a Colombian driver by an ICE officer in Biddeford, which candidates have used to criticize Collins' record.
