Trump Administration Opens Federal Lands for AI Data Centers
The Trump administration is soliciting private AI data center development on federal lands as state and local governments block hundreds of projects across 44 states.
The Trump administration has begun selecting four federal land sites to solicit private AI data center development to counter a growing wave of state and local opposition. This federal initiative leverages the fact that the United States government owns approximately 28% of national land, primarily in the sparsely populated West, to bypass local construction blocks.
Local opposition has led to more than 400 moratoriums across 44 states. In July, New York imposed a statewide moratorium on large data centers, and a Texas directive in August halted as many as 1,800 projects. Lawmakers in Pennsylvania are currently considering legislation that would allow municipalities to block similar developments.
These local restrictions persist despite high national adoption of AI technology, creating a conflict between state-level land-use concerns and the infrastructure needs of the AI industry.
