DOE Launches Nuclear Fuel Consortium to Meet AI Power Demand

The U.S. Department of Energy is establishing a new nuclear fuel supply chain consortium under the Defense Production Act to expand domestic production of nuclear fuel. The initiative focuses on addressing infrastructure gaps in mining, milling, conversion, and enrichment to reduce the United States' dependence on foreign enriched uranium.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright signed a Federal Register notice stating that surging electricity demands from artificial intelligence data centers could severely stress the electrical grid. The notice warns that these demands could increase annual outage hours from single digits to over 800, especially as older power generators retire.

To mitigate these risks, the DOE will enter into voluntary agreements with U.S. companies to develop action plans for a secure energy future. The first consortium meeting is scheduled for October 14.
