AI-Powered Cyber Attacks Target Australian Energy Networks
The Australian Energy Market Operator warns that AI-driven cyber threats are accelerating the exploitation of vulnerabilities within the national power grid.
The Australian Energy Market Operator has warned that Australia's national power grid faces escalating cyber threats as criminals weaponize artificial intelligence to exploit system vulnerabilities. The risk is heightened by the use of legacy systems and complex operating environments within critical infrastructure sectors.
A 2026 Threat-Hunting Report from CrowdStrike indicates that AI-triggered attacks were 2.5 times more common than human-led attacks over the past year, with AI-powered intrusions spiking by 89 percent during 2025. This shift has drastically reduced the breakout window—the time between an initial breach and the spread to other devices—from several days to hours or minutes.
In response to these trends, Five Eyes security agencies have advised organizations to strengthen their defenses. Security experts urge energy providers to patch older systems and rigorously test their defenses to counter AI's ability to rapidly identify weaknesses in critical infrastructure.
