St. Louis Fed President Musalem Signals Open Mind on September Rates

Alberto Musalem says he will not prejudge the September interest rate decision while emphasizing the need to return inflation to 2% within 18 months.

Alberto Musalem, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, stated he will maintain an open mind regarding the interest rate decision for the Federal Open Market Committee meeting scheduled for September 15-16. In a CNBC interview, Musalem described current monetary policy and financial conditions as accommodative, noting that the inflation-adjusted federal funds target rate is still below the committee's neutral long-run rate.

Musalem highlighted that underlying price pressures, currently between 2.5% and 3%, remain above the 2% target. He asserted that this target must be reached within the next 18 months. While he had previously argued for increasing the federal funds rate from 3.5% to 3.75% during the late July meeting due to sticky inflation, he now emphasizes that gradual interest rate increases are preferable to larger, more abrupt hikes in the future.
