Walmart Deploys Light-Up Digital Shelf Labels Across US Stores

Walmart is rolling out light-up digital shelf labels to help customers and employees locate products before the holiday season.

Walmart Inc. is deploying three new light-up digital shelf label features—Shop to Light, Pick to Light, and Stock to Light—to assist customers and employees in locating products. The Shop to Light feature allows app users to trigger a flashing light on a product's shelf label, a tool that recorded 5 million uses during its summer pilot. Pick to Light and Stock to Light provide similar functionality for store associates fulfilling digital orders and replenishing inventory.

The company plans to implement these tools companywide by the holiday season, expanding a digital label program already active in more than 4,300 stores. The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize store operations through AI and digital transformation.

The shift to digital labels has drawn scrutiny from state legislatures, including New Jersey, and consumer advocates who fear the technology enables dynamic or surveillance pricing. CEO John Furner denied these concerns, stating that the company prices the product rather than the individual customer. Walmart maintains that the labels are a modern way to display prices and not a tool for surveillance.
