Thailand Announces 4 Billion Baht Tourism Subsidy Package

The Government of Thailand plans to spend approximately 4 billion baht (US$600 million) to subsidize hotel stays and tourism expenses to offset a decline in international arrivals. Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul announced the package, which provides 1 million entitlements consisting of up to 2,000 baht for accommodation and 2,000 baht in co-payment vouchers for shops, spas, and restaurants.

The subsidies are scheduled for two phases: November 1 to December 15, 2026, and January 16 through February 2027. This initiative coincides with plans from Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to extend a broader cash handout program into the final quarter of 2026.

While the Thai Hotels Association welcomed the financial support, its leadership questioned the timing of the rollout. President Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun argued that the funds would be more effective during the low season rather than the traditional high season. Additionally, economists from Kiatnakin Phatra Financial Group and Kasikorn Research Center expressed skepticism, suggesting the program may boost sentiment without generating significant new travel or materially lifting GDP.
