Gavin Newsom Releases Tax Returns Amid Federal Probe
Governor Gavin Newsom released tax returns from 2021 to 2024 showing multi-million dollar earnings as he faces a politically motivated federal investigation.
California Governor Gavin Newsom released over 700 pages of personal and joint tax returns covering 2021 through 2024 on July 31, 2026. The disclosure follows criticism over a lack of filings since 2020 and occurs as the United States Department of Justice investigates the finances of Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, as well as the tax activity of her nonprofits.
The records show the couple earned at least $11 million during this period, with annual taxable income typically fluctuating between $1.39 million and $2 million. A peak of $3.5 million to $4.2 million occurred in 2021 following a home sale in Marin County. Most earnings derived from hospitality and wine businesses held in a blind trust, while Jennifer Siebel Newsom's production company, Girls Club Entertainment, reported consistent losses. The filings also detail nearly $2.8 million in federal and $500,000 in state income tax payments, alongside significant spending on childcare and household staff.
Newsom characterized the federal probe as a politically motivated attempt by the Trump administration to weaponize the Justice Department against a potential 2028 presidential candidate. His office asserts that the documents refute claims that the family enriched themselves through new ventures or nonprofits, noting that their income has actually declined since he took office.
