Malian Army Recaptures Strategic Northern Town of Kidal
The Government of Mali and Russian Africa Corps forces retook Kidal on October 6 after separatist forces executed a strategic withdrawal.
The Government of Mali, supported by Russia's Africa Corps paramilitary group, recaptured the strategic northern town of Kidal on October 6, 2026. The military junta described the takeover as the result of large-scale air-ground neutralization operations intended to destroy insurgent supply networks and restore public administration and social services.
The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a coalition of Tuareg and northern separatist factions, announced it executed a "strategic and controlled withdrawal" from the town. The FLA stated the move was a temporary operational measure to preserve its human and logistical capabilities, citing the "disproportionate use of aerial assets" by Russian mercenaries. The group maintained that the withdrawal occurred without direct combat.
Kidal had been held for approximately five to six months by a joint offensive between the FLA and the al-Qaeda affiliate Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). That April offensive resulted in the death of Mali's defense minister. The town has changed hands multiple times in recent years, including a previous recapture by Malian forces and the Wagner Group in November 2023 before it was lost again in April.
