Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Rejoins Democratic Socialists of America

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rejoined the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) national organization in August 2026. Her national membership had lapsed since 2019, though she originally joined the group in 2018.

The DSA disclosed the membership status amid internal discussions and efforts by chapters to draft the representative as a potential primary candidate for the 2028 presidential election. The organization stated that confirming her status was essential for members engaged in these deliberations.

This renewal follows a period of significant friction between the representative and the organization. In July 2024, the DSA withdrew its endorsement of Ocasio-Cortez at the request of its New York City chapter. That decision was based on her vote regarding a House resolution on antisemitism and her participation in a panel discussion the group described as a "deep betrayal" to the movement for Palestine.
