Sony to End Physical PlayStation Game Disc Releases by 2028
Sony Interactive Entertainment will stop producing physical PlayStation game discs starting January 2028, moving all future title releases to digital distribution.
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced it will cease the release of PlayStation games on physical discs starting in January 2028. All future titles must be downloaded via the PlayStation Store or through digital codes from retailers. The company stated this transition adapts to consumer trends where digital media preference significantly outpaces physical discs. Games released in disc format before the 2028 deadline will remain unaffected.
The decision follows the exclusively digital release of Grand Theft Auto VI and has led analysts to conclude that the upcoming PlayStation 6 will be digital-only. However, the move has sparked significant backlash. Sōhei Niikawa, creator of the Disgaea franchise, argued that physical editions provide emotional value and suggested that eliminating physical media makes the hardware consoles themselves redundant.
Market analysts warn the shift could destroy the global second-hand games market, which was valued at $7.2 billion in 2025. Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities stated that brick-and-mortar retail is doomed, noting that used games historically account for at least one-third of sales and provide gamers with cash to fund new purchases. Kazunori Ito of Morningstar added that consumers are having this digital transition effectively forced upon them. Retailers like CeX, which rely heavily on disc trade-ins, are viewed as particularly vulnerable in the long term.
