Democrats Plan Trump Family Business Probes After Midterms

Democratic lawmakers plan to investigate Trump-linked firms and business dealings using subpoena power if they win control of Congress in the November elections.

Democratic lawmakers intend to launch investigations into the business dealings of the Trump family if they secure control of the U.S. House or Senate in the November midterm elections. These probes, which could begin as early as February, would utilize subpoena power to target several entities, including Donald Trump Jr.'s venture capital firm 1789 Capital and Jared Kushner's private equity firm Affinity Partners.

Democratic lawmakers are specifically focusing on a $620 million Pentagon loan to Vulcan Elements and Kushner's financial dealings with Middle Eastern governments. Additionally, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse reported that oil and gas companies received tax breaks and subsidies following campaign donations to Donald Trump. Senator Adam Schiff warned companies against deleting records related to the administration, while Senator Richard Blumenthal confirmed the intent to use subpoena power upon a potential victory.

The White House dismissed the plans as baseless obstruction of the president's agenda. 1789 Capital hired legal counsel to rebuff inquiries, stating it would not be held hostage to political gamesmanship. While most Republicans oppose the move, Senator John Curtis expressed support for investigating specific allegations against Donald Trump Jr.
