Assam Jatiya Parishad Condemns Detention of Electoral Roll Protesters
The Assam Jatiya Parishad demanded the immediate release of peaceful protesters detained in New Delhi while demonstrating against electoral roll revisions.
The Assam Jatiya Parishad condemned the detention of several peaceful protesters, including senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, Yogendra Yadav, and Joint Secretary Kunki Chowdhury, during a planned march to Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The demonstrators were protesting the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, arguing that the process lacks transparency and risks excluding eligible voters.
President Lurinjyoti Gogoi and General Secretary Jagadish Bhuyan issued a joint statement from Guwahati urging the Delhi Police and central authorities to release the detainees immediately. The organization argued that democracy cannot function by silencing those who raise questions about electoral reforms and called for dialogue instead of coercive measures to address citizen concerns.
The group emphasized that public confidence in the electoral process requires accountability and that every eligible citizen must be able to vote without fear or uncertainty.
