China Restricts Rare Earth Exports Over US Semiconductor Bans

The Government of China has restricted the export of rare earth resources, reacting to United States export controls on advanced semiconductor technology. Beijing views the American technology bans as an economic attack designed to hinder its tech sector advancement and broader economic upgrades.

According to a report by Jefferies, the two nations are locked in a reciprocal dependency where the U.S. relies on Chinese rare earth materials for defense equipment and high-tech devices as much as China depends on American semiconductors. While U.S. restrictions have limited American firms' market access and accelerated China's domestic chip development, Beijing is unlikely to ease its resource restrictions unless Washington lifts the technology curbs.

The Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China defended the move, stating that controlling items with dual-use military and civilian attributes is a standard international practice.
