Border Clashes at Torkham Kill Child and Injure Aid Worker

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports a child was killed and an aid worker injured during clashes at the Torkham border crossing.

Clashes near the Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan resulted in the death of a local child and the injury of a humanitarian worker on Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported the casualties, noting that the fighting threatens the safety of local residents, humanitarian personnel, and Afghan refugees.

Torkham is a critical transit point for the region, facilitating nearly 85 percent of all recorded returns from Pakistan. Over 600,000 people used the crossing during the first nine months of 2026. While previous escalations have forced temporary closures and the relocation of services, the United Nations and its partners maintain assistance operations at reception and transit centers.

In response to the violence, the agency called on all parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, including humanitarian facilities, to ensure families can safely access necessary aid.
