Governor Larry Rhoden Leads South Dakota Polls Over Dan Ahlers
Republican Governor Larry Rhoden holds a 20-point lead over Democratic challenger Dan Ahlers in a recent poll ahead of the November 3 general election.
Republican Governor Larry Rhoden holds a significant lead in the race for South Dakota's governorship, according to a Mason-Dixon Polling and Strategy survey conducted from October 12-14. The poll of 500 likely voters shows Rhoden leading Democratic challenger Dan Ahlers 56% to 36%, with 8% of respondents remaining undecided.
While Rhoden maintains a 65% job approval rating and 50% favorability, Ahlers leads among independent voters with 51% support compared to Rhoden's 35%. A critical divide in the race is name recognition; 35% of voters did not recognize Ahlers, while only 1% were unfamiliar with the incumbent governor. Ahlers noted that despite TV advertising and digital campaigns, reaching voters remains a challenge.
Campaign manager Ian Fury attributed Rhoden's strength to broad demographic appeal, though he noted that the cost of living remains a primary concern for younger and older voters. Analysts suggest the Republican Party has largely unified behind Rhoden following a contentious primary involving candidates such as Toby Doeden, Dusty Johnson, and Jon Hansen. Conversely, the Democratic Party has struggled to groom statewide candidates, contributing to the current recognition gap ahead of the November 3 election.
