Moonshot AI Executives Seek Settlement Ahead of Hong Kong IPO

Moonshot AI executives are negotiating a settlement with Recurrent.ai to resolve allegations of data theft and investor fraud before a planned Hong Kong public offering.

Moonshot, a Chinese artificial intelligence startup, is attempting to settle a legal dispute with Recurrent.ai and its investors to clear the path for a planned initial public offering in Hong Kong. Recurrent.ai alleges that Moonshot CEO Yang Zhilin and CTO Zhang Yutao enriched themselves through false representations and the unauthorized transfer of large-language-model data to a Moonshot subsidiary in April 2023.

Further accusations include the deletion of key data in September 2024. Additionally, Recurrent is weighing legal action in the Cayman Islands against Moonshot President Zhang Yutong, claiming she received a concealed shareholding for personal benefit. Yang Zhilin has denied these claims, asserting that he reached a formal agreement with the Recurrent board to establish Moonshot.

Recurrent and its investors are seeking compensation equivalent to 10.5% of Moonshot's original shares. Based on a $30 billion valuation, this claim could exceed $700 million. While the dispute is currently in arbitration in Hong Kong, analysts suggest it is unlikely to block the IPO, though it may create governance and disclosure concerns for potential investors.
