U.S. Banks Report Strong Q3 Earnings Amid AI Risks

Major U.S. banks reported strong third-quarter earnings driven by equity trading and consumer spending, while executives warned of economic uncertainty and AI-driven deposit shifts.

Major U.S. banks reported third-quarter earnings characterized by resilient consumer spending and robust equity trading, though Wells Fargo results lagged behind peers. JPMorgan Chase indicated a positive net interest income outlook for the coming year, noting the ability to replace maturing low-yield securities with higher-yielding assets in a higher-for-longer rate environment.

Despite the strong results, CEOs Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase, Brian Moynihan of Bank of America, and David Solomon of Goldman Sachs expressed caution regarding sovereign risks in France and general economic uncertainty.

Executives also identified a new systemic risk involving AI agents, such as Meta's Muse. These tools could allow consumers to move deposits more efficiently to higher-yielding products, which would increase funding costs for the banking system. JPMorgan Chase management stated they are managing this risk and considering new products to maintain deposit relationships.
