Liberty Poll Warns Free Speech Policies May Cost Labour Votes
Liberty released polling data showing that a majority of UK voters would be influenced by a party's position on free speech in the next election.
The human rights organization Liberty released polling data indicating that the UK government's approach to free speech could cost the Labour party votes in the next general election. A survey of 2,017 people conducted by More in Common found that three in five respondents stated a party's position on free speech would influence their vote.
The findings follow public concern over the use of the Crime and Policing Act to restrict protests and the arrests of individuals supporting Palestine Action, a proscribed group. Liberty Director Akiko Hart described the results as a wake-up call and urged the prime minister to move away from restrictions toward a principled defense of free speech.
The Home Office defended the government's position, stating that while it protects fundamental rights, it maintains a clear line between free expression and unlawful behavior, such as inciting hatred or supporting proscribed organizations.
