California Voters Decide on First-of-its-Kind Billionaire Wealth Tax

California voters are deciding on Proposition 40, a one-time 5% tax on assets over $1 billion to fund education and healthcare.

California voters are deciding on Proposition 40, a first-of-its-kind ballot initiative that would impose a one-time 5% tax on the wealth of residents and trusts with assets exceeding $1 billion. The measure aims to generate tens of billions of dollars to fund public education, food assistance, and state healthcare programs, specifically to offset federal funding cuts.

Proposition 40 has divided Democratic leadership. Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Ro Khanna support the measure as a tool to combat wealth inequality. Conversely, Governor Gavin Newsom opposes the tax, arguing it would trigger an exodus of billionaires and reduce long-term tax revenue.

The campaign has seen massive spending, with the opposing group, Building a Better California, raising over $333 million from tech moguls including Sergey Brin and John Doerr. Supporters are led by the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West. Even if the measure passes, it could be nullified by Propositions 41 or 42, which seek to ban new taxes on financial assets.

As of Wednesday morning, results remain too close to call with millions of votes still being counted.
