German Ambassador Hails India-EU Trade Pact as Game Changer

German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann described the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as a "game changer" for bilateral economic ties. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi on July 28 and 29, 2026, Ackermann stated that the agreement is expected for implementation in the first half of next year and will reduce tariffs and trade barriers to boost investment and people-to-people movement.

This development follows a five-day visit by Indian Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to Spain, Belgium, Finland, and Estonia. During meetings in Brussels with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to the early signing and implementation of the pact. Rubix Data Science reports the FTA could enable India to redirect USD 10-11 billion in exports from the United States to the European Union.

Parallel to trade goals, Germany is targeting an increase in tourism. Director Romit Theophilus of the German National Tourist Office announced a goal of exceeding one million overnight stays by Indian visitors, noting that Indian leisure travelers currently spend an average of 3,000 euros per trip.
