UK Government Classifies AI Datacentres as Critical Infrastructure

The Government of the United Kingdom has classified AI datacentres as critical national infrastructure to accelerate the planning and rollout of these facilities. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan defended the move, stating that expanding capacity is essential for national security and digital sovereignty.

This policy shift follows a report from the environmental thinktank Verdant, which claims the industry is overstating its economic impact. Verdant research suggests planned datacentres will create only 10,400 direct jobs, roughly 25% of the 40,000 jobs projected by the industry lobby group TechUK. Verdant further argued that these facilities consume excessive energy and water, which could hinder climate goals.

In response to the rapid buildout, the Green Party in England called for a moratorium on new constructions. Party leader Zack Polanski accused the government of ignoring local opposition to benefit private companies without providing clear evidence of the benefits. TechUK has maintained that its employment projections remain accurate and are based on transparent industry data.
